Flight prices often seem like pure luck, a bit of a lottery. They aren’t. Once you understand how fares are built, you can save money on almost every booking. These are the 7 tricks our editorial team relies on for every single trip.

1. The right time to book

For flights within Europe, the best window is usually 6–10 weeks before departure. For long-haul trips, 3–5 months tends to work better. Leaving it until the last minute almost always means higher prices for flights, unlike package holidays.

2. Fly on Tuesdays & Wednesdays

The cheapest days to depart are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Friday and Sunday evenings, on the other hand, regularly come with a 20–40% premium, because that’s when business travellers and weekend commuters are moving around.

3. Use the flight calendar

Our flight calendar gives you daily prices in a monthly overview. If your dates can shift by just ±2 days, you save 25% on average. So yes, it’s worth taking a quick look before you book.

💡 Reisedrop tip: Also switch on a price alert. We’ll let you know as soon as your chosen flight falls below your target price, so you don’t have to keep checking every day.

4. Really compare fares

A €49 basic fare can end up costing more than an €89 classic fare once hand luggage, checked bags and seat selection are added. Our fare table lays out all inclusions clearly side by side, so you’re comparing final prices rather than tempting teaser offers.

5. Check open-jaw flights

Flying out to Barcelona and back from Madrid? These so-called open-jaw (multi-city) flights are often cheaper than making two separate bookings. And they save you the journey back to your arrival city as well.

6. Toddlers fly almost for free

Children under 2 travelling on a lap usually fly free, or for a very small fee. Enter your children’s ages in the search and we automatically include child discounts in the total price.

7. Watch prices instead of regretting

Once you’ve booked, there’s no point looking back. Before you book, though, look properly: our price history shows whether the current fare is above or below the 30-day average. That way, you spot real deals straight away.
